Til læreren:

This week’s artist used an election poster with a photo of the sitting president of the USA, Richard Nixon, and played with it to create his art video “Nixonvisions”, from 1972.

Oppgaver

Useful vocabulary: to flicker, manipulate, distort, a collage, still picture, portrait, patterns, coffee cup, (chin, brow, collar)

Take notes and discuss in groups/class:

  1. Use at least 5 of the vocabulary words to describe what you see on the video.
  2. Describe the feelings you get from watching the video. If you can, listen to the sound track.
    What kind of emotion(s) or atmosphere does the sound create here?
    How does the sound combine with the visual images to create emotion?
  3. What impression of President Nixon does the video as a whole leave you with?
    (If you can, try to compare with the impression of Nixon you get from just the still pictures that begin and end the video.)
  4. The coffee cup has been edited in from an ad for a brand of coffee.
    What does the coffee cup make you think of?
    Why do you think the artist added this to his piece of Nixon art?
  5. Look more closely at the images and patterns in Nixon’s face.
    What do the geometrical shapes remind you of?
    What do you think is the purpose behind these distortions?

Read the text from the National Museum before doing the next exercises.

Write a short text and discuss in groups/class:

  1. Slettemark made a protest against the Vietnam War before he started his long work «Nixonvisions” work. Is there anything in the video that might remind us of a war going on?

Choose either exercise 7 or 8:

  1. Revisit question 3 and 4 above.
    What did reading the text add to the impression of Nixon that Slettemark may have been trying to create? Give reasons for your answer.
  2. Consider the definition of “caricature” in the National Museum’s text.
    Does this video fit the definition?
    If so, what do you think Slettemark wanted to achieve by caricaturing Nixon?
    Is the video political satire?
  3. Do you think Slettemark playing with Nixon’s photo can be compared with children drawing moustaches on pictures?
    Why/why not? Discuss.

Choose one of the tasks below:

  1. Let the video inspire you to write a humorous poem or short story starring Nixon and a cup of coffee.
  2. How do you think President Nixon would react to seeing this video of “himself”?
    Write a letter from Nixon to Slettemark in response to the video.
  3. Read the poem “Nyttårsdiktet” by the Norwegian poet Jan Erik Vold.
    The poem was written in 1968, a time when the USA became increasingly involved in the war in Vietnam.
    Translate the poem into English and compare the political message in the poem with the message in Slettemark’s video.

    var ikke slik den pleier være.
    Da vi merket klokken ble tolv
    gikk jeg ut på kjøkkenet,
    noen av de andre
    fulgte etter. Hva snakket vi om?

    inn i stua igjen, Siri og jeg
    ble stående og ta på hverandre.

    med psykotiske barn. Jeg har nå
    skrevet opp på døra mi,
    i et hjerte det faller dråper fra,
    med grønn filtpenn og store bokstaver:

  1. Use sources on the Internet or elsewhere to find more information about the Vietnam War and the protests against it.
    Make a PowerPoint presentation where you explain about the Vietnam War as background for Slettemark’s art.
    Document your sources carefully and remember to indicate what in your presentation comes from which source.
